Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest Trivias
Keira Knightley wore wigs made of real human hair for the first scenes of
the film. She had cut it short for her role in Domino.
This is the first time Johnny Depp has portrayed the same character in more
than one movie. Johnny Depp has also said that he is willing to continue the
role of Jack Sparrow beyond the current trilogy.
For a dose of authenticity in the final twist at the end of the film, the
actors were not told, prior to filming, that Geoffrey Rush would be
appearing in the movie. They were told, before the scene was shot, that the
person coming down the stairs would be Anamaria from The Curse of the Black
Pearl; the looks of surprise on their faces as Rush descends are genuine.
Another authentic expression is Will's when he witnesses Jack and Elizabeth
kissing. This was not put into Orlando Bloom's script so that the look would
be real.
Stellan Skarsgård and Jonathan Pryce also both appear in the movie Ronin but
this is the first movie in which they do not share scenes.
Legendary rocker Keith Richards, Depp's personal friend and inspiration for
his flamboyant pirate persona, had originally agreed to appear in a cameo
role as Jack Sparrow's father, but had to pull out due to a commitment with
the Rolling Stones concert tour. He has now signed on to appear in a short
cameo role in the third movie.
The movie is tied into Virtual Magic Kingdom with players being able to win
items from the official site. Items include a Captain Jack costume, a
poster, a Davy Jones Organ, a Skeleton Monkey, and a Dead Man's Chest. The
Captain Jack costume code however is extremely difficult to get, with a code
generated for it only once every so many codes.
For the film's release, the Walt Disney Company had the Pirates of the
Caribbean rides in Walt Disney World and Disneyland redesigned to feature
captain Jack Sparrow, Barbossa, and an appearance by the films' supernatural
character Davy Jones as part of the attraction and reopened on the film's
opening day.
Tia Dalma's firefly-surrounded dwelling resembles a small shack seen at the
beginning of the famous Disneyland ride.
The coffin that Jack uses in the beginning of the film recalls the coffin
Guybrush uses in Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge when he is off to the
voodoo lady's shack.
It has been suggested that the film borrows from the Monkey Island series in
other areas. However Monkey Islands creator Ron Gilbert has stated that he
himself borrowed ideas from Pirates of the Caribbean (theme park ride), Such
as the dog holding keys in its mouth.
One of the sailors on the trade ship suggests that Elizabeth’s dress belongs
to “The ghost of a lady, widowed before her marriage ... Searching for her
husband, lost at sea.” This is a reference to the back story of another
Disney ride, the Haunted Mansion.
In the first visit to Tia Dalma's shack, there are clues that foreshadow
Barbossa's resurrection.
The undead state of the undead monkey (as demonstrated by Jack when he
shoots it) suggests, despite the conclusion of the first film, that the
curse may not be lifted. This was hinted at by the scene following the end
credits of the first film.
The undead monkey is seen interacting with someone offscreen with black,
pirate-like boots, and seems to recognize whoever this may be.
Jack steals a ring that was worn by Barbossa (in the scene from Pirates of
the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl; when Barbossa reaches out into
the moonlight, you can see that it is the same ring).
Jack is briefly shown handling a hat that looks like the one worn by
Barbossa.
The music playing while the crew approaches the shack is the theme of the
pirates and Barbossa in the first movie.
The Tortuga scene was inspired by part of the Disney attraction, and stuck
closely to it, with the wild pirate revelers looking almost exactly like the
theme park ride, particularly in the way they appear to chase each other in
small circles akin to their animatronic counterparts on the ride.
The completely computer-generated Davy Jones turned out to be so realistic
that many reviewers have mistakenly identified Nighy as wearing prosthetic
makeup.
Many of the Tortuga scenes were unused shots from the first film and were on
the second DVD of the collector's edition of the first film of Pirates.
So far both movies of the series prominently feature references to iconic
pirate songs; in the first the song Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me) is sung
by several characters, most prominently Elizabeth and Jack, and a variation
of it is featured in several scores in the movie, while in the second the
title (and, subsequently, the treasure) reference the song Dead Man's Chest.
The skull on the film's poster has a voodoo doll resembling Jack hanging
from it. It also shares the red bandana Jack wears about his head.
When Jack takes a ring from Tia Dalma's table, a heart-shaped locket is
visible. When Will is getting the key from Davy Jones, a very
similar-looking locket is seen open on the organ.
In the first two movies, references were made to Singapore. Modern Singapore
was founded in 1819 by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles as a trading post for the
British East India Company. However, the island had been already known as
Singapura in Malay since the 15th century.
The East India Company was formed to trade with India and the East Indies
and operated there and in the waters between there and the United Kingdom.
The film is set in the West Indies, on the other side of the globe.
This is the second Walt Disney Pictures film to receive a PG-13 rating from
the MPAA, the first being the previous Pirates film.
This was also the first Walt Disney Pictures film to use a new
computer-generated Disney production logo before the film.
Davy Jones' tentacle beard is comparable to the beard of Captain LeChuck
from the Monkey Island series of videogames, specifically his wriggly,
apparently living beard from Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge. Monkey
Island creator Ron Gilbert has stated on his blog that "if I'd thought of
the squid tentacles for a beard, I would have done that."
There is a scene in Tortuga where a man is being dunked in a well, and then
comes up, spitting out some water. This reflects the scene in the original
ride where the pirates are dunking the mayor.
Another scene reflecting the original ride is when Jack returns to the Black
Pearl after nearly abandoning them when the Kraken attacks. He shoots some
barrels of gunpowder that explode, angering the Kraken. This is similar to
the end of the Disneyland attraction, when the Pirates are shooting at each
other and one shot hits a hanging barrel of gunpowder.
This movie marks the first time a Kraken was made with modern CGI.
In
an interview with CGSociety, Visual Effects Art Director Aaron McBride
revealed that when he was given the task of doing photo-real illustrations
of Davy Jones, there was talk that Christopher Walken may be brought on for
the role.
During the course of the movie Elizabeth claims to have learned
swordsmanship from Will. Later on she pulls a sword stunt hitting two
enemies backwards which was actually played by Orlando Bloom as Legolas in
"Lord of the Rings".The dice game that Will Turner plays with Davy Jones is
called Liar's Dice, a gambling game where each player has to make
consecutively higher bids based upon how many of each die they claim are on
the table (two threes, four fives, etc.), until a player is called a liar,
in which case all the dice are shown and it's seen if the bid is correct.
Normally a player only loses a die when caught in a lie and is not out of
the game until he has lost all his dice.
Deleted footage of Tortuga from Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the
Black Pearl (2003) was added to the final cut of this movie. This is the
first film to feature Disney's new logo, a computer-generated model of the
Magic Kingdom, replacing the blue and white silhouette. When Mr. Gibbs is
enlisting new recruits at the tavern, a bunch of men are pulling a man out
of a well, and he slowly spits out water. This is a recreation of a scene in
the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at the Walt Disney theme parks.
At $135,634,554 domestically in its opening weekend and it was the fastest
motion picture to reach $100 million, accomplishing the feat in two
days.During filming, the cast and crew had to be evacuated to Los Angeles
because of Hurricane Wilma.Tia Dalma's swamp is a recreation of the opening
bayou scene in the ride in Disneyland complete with fireflies.
The pirate musical "band" that was playing in the inn at Tortuga are also
from the ride. Notice the one playing the accordion. The shack by the river
as the crew go to see Tia Dalma is identical to the shack on the far side of
the river across from the boarding dock of the Magic Kingdom's "Jungle
Cruise" ride in Orlando, Florida. When the word "Tortuga" is set on fire on
the deck, it is written in the trademark Disney font.
The conch-man spoke Cantonese after his head was cut-off.The music played
during the pub brawl on Tortuga was not composed for the movie. It is a
traditional piece called "Fisher's Horpipe".Davy Jones and his 18-member
crew of the Flying Dutchmen were entirely computer-generated, except for
Bootstrap Bill. Bill Nighy wore a dark gray motion-capture suit with dozens
of reference marks on his face and body while performing. ILM has refined
the motion-capture system so that only two cameras were needed, compared
with up to 16 in the past.
In June 2006, the "Flying Dutchman" set ship was towed to Castaway Cay,
Disney Cruise Line's private island, where it was displayed in promotion
release of the movies.Gore Verbinski did not tell the cast what was to
happen with the bone cage. He wanted to get their natural reactions when it
swung from side to side.In order to get an actual surprised reaction, the
small kissing scene between Jack Sparrow and Elizabeth Swann was cut out of
Orlando Bloom's script.
While the script for the second movie was being written, Keira Knightley
suggested the scene between Jack and Elizabeth where Jack is handcuffed to
the ship. For the film's release, the Walt Disney Company redesigned the
Pirates of the Caribbean rides in Walt Disney World and Disneyland to
feature captain Jack Sparrow, Barbossa, and an appearance by the films'
supernatural character Davy Jones as part of the attraction and will be
featured beginning on the film's opening day.The gigantic wheel upon which
the sword fight between Sparrow, Turner and Norrington takes place weighed
at 1800 pounds and stood at 18 feet tall.
Keira Knightley had to wear hair extensions because she had cut her hair
short for her role in Domino (2005).Rolling Stone Keith Richards was set to
make a cameo appearance as the father of Captain Jack Sparrow, but Richards
had to pull out of the project due to his commitment with the Rolling Stones
world tour. Johnny Depp had previously said that his performance as Jack
Sparrow was based on Richards. The movie was shot back-to-back with Pirates
of the Caribbean: At Worlds End (2007).
Stay after the credits for an additional scene. The Black Pearl is the only
ship in the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and its sequel which
operate under power. All others, except for the "Interceptor" from the first
movie, are built atop other ships such as barges with only the portions seen
by the cameras completed.
When Elizabeth gets ready to shoot the explosives/rum to ignite it, the pan
of the musket is open. After the musket was thrown all over the ship, there
would have been no primer powder left in the pan. Consequently, the musket
would never have fired without stopping and replacing the primer. The large
world map being painted in Beckett's office has a compass topped with a
fleur-de-lis. Since the fleur-de-lis was the official symbol of the French
monarchy, it is very unlikely it would appear on a map commissioned by a
leader of the (English) East India Company.
In the scene where Jack escapes the island from the Cannibals and is hit by
a wave, you can still see the eyes vaguely on his face, however, the eyes
that were painted over his eyelids that made it look like his eyes were open
when they were shut are completely gone with no trace. On the ships the term
"port" is used to describe the left side. The term port was not in use on
ships during that time, instead it was "larboard".
As Elizabeth is about to cuff Jack a crew member is clearly visible at the
back of the boat. This is not an actor because all the characters had
already abandoned ship. When Davey Jones first comes on the Black Pearl, Jack
Sparrow has a sparkly coin/disc thing in his hair on the right (your left).
As Davey Jones and Jack are talking and the scene switches back and forth
the coin/disc Disappears then reappears again in his hair.
Every time it is raining, the characters' faces are dry in close up shots.
When the camera pulls back, the body is drenched as it should be in a heavy
rain storm. In the beginning of the movie when Jack shoots from within the
casket he extends the gun up through the hole made by the blast and moves
the barrel back and forth as if ready to shoot again if need be. His pistol
is a muzzle-loader incapable of more than one shot without reloading.
When Elizabeth is talking to Norrington, her left part of her hair is in the
back of her shoulder. In the next shot, it's over her shoulder. When Sparrow,
Turner, and Norrington are sword fighting and Turner and Norrington step out
onto the water wheel, Sparrow walks up behind Norrington and grabs the key.
In the scene before this Turner takes the key from Norrington and should
still have the key.
When the mill wheel breaks loose and rolls through the forest with the two
swordsmen fighting on it, it rolls past the pirates fighting over the chest.
Later on the beach, the same pirates are attempting to board the departing
ship and the mill wheel appears from the forest. The wheel was moving
quicker, it passed them and could not be steered. How did it get to the
beach last? When Will and Gibbs are in the ball made by the cannibals, there
are three other characters with them (Cotton, Marty, and an Asian man). When
the cage rolls down the hill and lands in water, the Asian man is still
visible. In the next shot, the Asian man is gone and instead there is a
black man with frizzie hair. This man remains a character for the remainder
of the film, yet the Asian man never reappears.
When Elizabeth tries to head for the gun in order to shoot the gun powder
(and rum) barrels she tries to climb some stairs (right before Jack takes up
the gun). Suddenly, the ship is hit so hard that Elizabeth falls down. The
gun, however, does not move at all.Although several people mentioned that
Jack Sparrow had gone to 'Singapore', that island country was not found and
given the name 'Singapore' until the early 19th century by Sir Stamford
Raffles of the East India Company in 1819.
After Elizabeth handcuffed Jack she climbs into the lifeboat, you see a blue
lining from the pool under water. When watching Will, Jack, and Norrington
sword fight on the beach, Elizabeth's nose and cheeks are slightly
sunburned. When back on the ship, they're only tanned, and no longer
burned. When the Flying Dutchman first gives a broadside to the Black Pearl,
it does a fair amount of damage to the Captain's cabin stern windows. Yet
when the Pearl is fired upon by the Dutchman using the "triple guns", the
damage isn't there anymore.
When Jack Sparrow, Elizabeth and Norrington are arguing on the pier in
Tortuga, the hull of a ship can be clearly seen behind them bearing a
Plimsoll line, which wasn't used until the late 19th century.
