Alone in the Dark Plot
Alone in the Dark is a 2005 Brightlight Pictures horror film based on the
popular video game of the same name. It is directed by Uwe Boll, and stars
Christian Slater as supernatural detective Edward Carnby. The movie is a
direct sequel to the last installment of the game series, but contains plot
elements that directly contradict it, thus whether it's considered canonical
is debatable. The German band Solution Coma contributed the title song.
Like Uwe Boll's previous attempt at a movie adaptation of a video game,
House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark was universally panned by critics, and
was cited many times as a lock for worst movie of 2005, and in fact,
possibly one of the worst in history. Like other Boll films, Alone in the
Dark has a small cult following, similar to many Ed Wood films.
According to original screenwriter Blair Erickson, the movie was intended to
be a suspenseful thriller. Director Uwe Boll - disappointed with the lack of
car chases, gun fights, or sex scenes - personally re-wrote the screenplay.
The film was released in Australia on DVD in late December 2005.
Tagline: Evil Awakens.
Anachronisms: The police cars that arrive at the orphanage "20 years ago"
have three brake lights, a much more recent feature.
Crew or equipment visible: Camera reflected in the door of Carnby's taxi at
the beginning of the film.
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): In
the beginning taxi car chase, after Slater's cab is slammed into the wall
and the villain backs up to ram the cab again, the camera shot shows the
villain "throwing" the car into reverse. The car should already be in
reverse and should be shifted into drive to ram the other taxi.
Continuity: During the taxi chase at the beginning of the film, the cab
chasing Edward Carnby has no rear license plate in one shot, but grows one
in the next shot.
Miscellaneous: The end credits list a "TTransportation Captain".
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers):
One of the soldiers checks the pulse of a person lying on the ground to see
if the man is dead - with gloves on.
Revealing mistakes: After Agent Cheung dies in the cavern and the team is
walking away to find a way out of the tunnels you can see Agent Cheung raise
her head just as Agent Barr walks past her.
Revealing mistakes: When Pinkerton slams Carnby's head against the ground
during their battle in Chinatown, several inches are visible between the
actor's head and the floor at the moment of impact.
Errors in geography: Although set in the United States, a Canadian Scotia
Bank is visible in the last scene.
Continuity: During the taxi chase, the taxi rams Carnby's taxi and the
bonnet/fender are dented. However, seconds later when they turn a corner,
the taxi is undamaged.
Errors in geography: Though its meant to take place in California, a Bank of
Montreal building is repeatedly shown as well as a Canada Post box.
Continuity: When Ron (the guardian) is killed, he fall face down. When is
find by Edward Carnby and Aline Cedrac he is on his back.
