The plot is similar to the 1994 film Camp Nowhere, except that Camp Nowhere is about a summer camp.

Most, if not all, of the computers in this movie are shown to be made by Apple Computer, and/or run Mac OS X. Coincidentally, Justin Long became well known in the months running up to this movie's release for his appearance on a series of Get a Mac campaign advertisements.

The Harmon campus was shot at the Chapman University campus in Orange, CA.

Harmon is based on Hiram College in Hiram, OH. This is noticeable in several places, notably that the film is set in Ohio and a reference is made to James A. Garfield attending Harmon; in actuality, he was president of Hiram.

One of the final words of the film, "fuck", was bleeped out to maintain the film's PG-13 rating.

The movie/manga Battle Royale was referenced several times.

The phrase "a little can-do attitude and some elbow grease" was taken from Dodgeball, a movie Justin Long was also featured in.

Sherman creates a web site for the South Harmon Institute of Technology, but he cannot register a .edu domain without the Institute being accredited.After Ambrose sets off the sprinkler system and the whole party decides to continue, nobody is electrocuted from the band instruments and equipment and such which are obviously plugged straight into the outlets.

In the first scene at the building that would become South Harmon, when Schrader jumps aside and shrieks, you can hear the scream before his mouth begins moving.When Bartleby takes Monica back to his room he hits himself with the door which is clearly in an open hallway and opens from the right. In the next cut the door opens from the left and is in an alcove.

When Sherman is in the room with the pool table, he backs into the rack holding the pool sticks and knocks them down. In the next shot back to him, there are 2 sticks and the 9-ball rack back on the rack.When Bartleby receives the letter telling him about the meeting with the state board of accreditors, the letter says that the meeting is at 11am. But, when Bartleby and company arrive for the meeting, they tell the receptionist that their meeting is at 3pm.

The stamp on Bartelby's last rejection letter (Ohio State) changes between shots while he is opening the envelope.When Bartleby and crew are walking into the "college" and the skateboarders come riding out, the angle changes and we see the camera men in the right of the screen.

When Bartleby is giving the orientation speech to all the students, the mike keeps on giving feedback, Rory is on the mixing board trying to fix the problem but there are no mikes plugged into it, or outputs coming out of it.When Bartelby locks Ambrose out of South Harmon the camera is reflected in the glass door.When Van Horn is riding in the golf cart, the reflection of the crew can be clearly seen on the hood of the cart.

Lewis Black's character says the word "fuck" twice, but one was literally bleeped out in order to make the movie PG-13.WILHELM SCREAM: Heard from the person on the skateboard, just after Bartleby samples one of Glen's "wads".'Jamie Isaac Conde' replaced 'Adam Brody' for the character of Rickard.
