1408 Trivias
The clock on the nightstand repeatedly shows "60:00" before the shock of the
clock setting itself to 60:00 actually happens.Police investigations would
almost certainly have occurred within room 1408 following one or more of the
well publicized deaths, as is common practice when dealing with any
suspected suicide or murder, yet there was no mention of any police related
fatalities or occurrences within the room. When Mike Enslin is on the ledge
outside, the size of the ledge changes. When there is a shot of just his
feet, he appears to only be able to fit half of his foot on the ledge at
most, however when there are long shots which include Enslin’s feet, they
are fully on the ledge and are given about an inch of space.
During the scene where Mike unplugs the clock radio from the outlet, the
champagne bottle that he was given disappears from the table for a few
shots, then eventually returns. While Mike Enslin is lying on the floor, his
hand goes in and out of the bed comforter repeatedly.
By the taskbar on Mike Enslin’s laptop, we see that he is using Windows XP
as his operating system. When the fire sprinkler system comes on and sprays
the computer, the laptop briefly displays some errors. One of these errors
is a "Windows caused a fatal exception" (aka blue screen of death screen)
error from a previous version of Windows (Windows ME or prior), not the XP
fatal exception message that appears with text in the top of the screen, not
in the center of the screen. After he eats one of the chocolates, the other
chocolate remains on the pillow, then in the next scene there are no
chocolate on the pillow. A couple of scenes later, he grabs/eats said
chocolate from pillow.
The initial inspiration for Stephen King came from a collection of real-life
news stories about Parapsychologist, Christopher Chacon's investigation of a
notoriously haunted room at the famous Hotel Del Coronado in Coronado,
California.Kate Walsh was originally cast in this film, but was forced to
drop out due to scheduling conflicts with the television show 'Grey's
Anatomy'. She was replaced by Mary McCormack.
The story this film was based on was almost never written. Stephen King
originally created the first few pages of '1408' for his nonfiction book,
"On Writing," as an example of how to revise a first draft. The story,
however, intrigued him, and he wound up not only finishing a complete draft,
but adapting it for an audio-book compilation of short stories. There are
many references to the number "13" throughout the movie. The room 1408, add
each number together makes 13. The room is on the 14th floor, and the Hotel
skips the 13th floor, so its technically on the 13th floor. The room's key
lock also has "6214" which adds up to 13. And the first death was in the
year 1912, which adds to 13.
One of the first victims of the room was named "Grady." Grady was a
character in "The Shining," Stephen King's other horror story about a
hotel.Mike Enslin has a Chicago White Sox hat. Chicago is John Cusack's home
town.
