The Power Of Honey

Honey is prepared by the honeybees from the nectar of flowers. It is a sweet thick fluid, which contains about 75-80% sugar. The rest is a mixture of water and minerals like phosphorous, calcium, magnesium, acids and enzymes. Along with minerals, honey gives us energy also. 100ml of honey has about 300 to 320 calories. One tsp of honey would give us about 15 to 16 calories.

The enzymes present in honey help in digestion of food especially raw sugars and starch. The basic difference between sugar and honey is that, sugar contained in honey is in a very simple predigested form and thus are directly absorbed by our body. But regular sugar has to be broken down into simpler forms to be digested and absorbed. Honey can be used as a sweetening agent in sweets and desserts.

It also has excellent medicinal properties. Honey is supposed to be a good thirst quencher. Arabs take honey and water across deserts. Another aspect of honey is its use in the beauty treatment. A mixture of honey, cornflour and limejuice is a very common pack for aging skin. It is also a natural moisturiser, which helps dry skin problems. Honey is a multi-purpose food item with plenty of other uses too. However, this does not mean that you can eat as much honey as you like. Excess of calories make us fat and honey does have calories. Honey helps digestion but not at the cost of giving you a sweet tooth!

As Medicine
  • One to two tsp full of honey in a glass of hot milk helps you to sleep well.
  • Honey as a general tonic acts as a disinfectant and an antiseptic. It has been used for ages by our ancestors. Appropriate intake of honey helps the digestive system sterlises and prevents growth of disease-causing germs.
  • Honey is the best home remedy for sore throats, coughs and colds. A mixture of honey and lime juice in equal parts is used in most homes since ages.
  • Honey has proved to be a good stimulant for a weak heart.
  • Honey is a very popular laxative and helps combat constipation
Kick Start Your Day With Breakfast

The first and the most important meal of the day is breakfast. This meal is often ignored or neglected by many people. In haste for reaching the workplace, school or college. We often skip breakfast or gobble a hurried one. This is where all the trouble with our diet begins. Breakfast is our first meal after our night-long fast. The time gap between the last meal(dinner/supper) and the next one(breakfast) is rather long, usually more than 10 hours. Skipping breakfast can seriously affect our health.
